Tackling Malnutrition in UP

Vaishnavi is a 2-year-old girl child from Deri skinner village, Manikpur. Her father is a driver and mostly stays outside the house due to the nature of his job. Vaishnavi's mother is a maid who works in various houses, due to which she is unable to pay attention to her child. In her absence, Ms.Rekha, a member of Jai Maa Bhawani SHG, takes care of Vaishnavi.

During the monthly meeting, an awareness session was conducted on malnutrition by Ambuja Foundation where Vaishnavi’s mother discussed her daughter's problem. To understand the issue, an Ambuja Foundation coordinator visited her home and found that the girl child was very weak. The very next day, the coordinator took the child to the nearest CHC and she was diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition - weighing just 2.8kg - along with other complications.

She was immediately referred to the NRC to improve her health status under special care. As a result, Vaishnavi has recovered and her parents are being counseled about personal hygiene, complementary feeding, and the adoption of good feeding habits.
