A special invitation for loans went out to SHGs from the Women’s Federation of Chandrapur in 2015 - for building household toilets. But only 5 applications came in. Meena Bobade pledged to convince her community to build toilets - conducting awareness drives, going door to door and talking at village functions. They also formed a Good Morning Team to guard for open defecation. In just 8 months Pimpalgaon had 100% toilet coverage - all of which are being used.

Pawan’s mother-in-law kept insisting that she have the child at home. She had heard rumours about how crowded the hospital was and doctors didn’t pay attention. But Sakhi Sunita Sharma explained the potential risks of home delivery and in the 9th month finally convinced Pawan to deliver at the hospital. Through an ultrasound the doctor noticed that the baby was in breach position, and due to an immediate institutional delivery, both mother and baby were safe.

The automobile industry is one of the most male dominated industries in India and it is tough for women to find a role in it. Despite being a graduate of mechanical engineering, Poulami Metya from Howrah was unable to settle with a job. She then enrolled in the 2&3 wheeler repairing technician course at SEDI and was the only female in her batch. On graduation she was successfully placed as a Customer Relationship Manager at Yamaha Technocon Services - breaking age old gender stereotypes in the process.

Farmers in Chandrapur faced challenges with money lenders in selling their cotton produce, until the women from Jangu Devi Self Help Group stepped in. They registered themselves to sell cotton, procured from farmers and sold to ginners at the correct price – enhancing profits for farmers and earning their SHG a profit in the meantime. 39 other SHGs have followed suit in procuring cotton.
